Amsterdam’s mayor will deliver an unprecedented formal apology this month acknowledging the city’s complicity in the Holocaust and its mistreatment of Jewish survivors after the war.

Set for April 24 during Yom HaShoah commemorations, Mayor Femke Halsema’s apology comes ahead of damning research from the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies that confirms how local Amsterdam authorities actively cooperated with Nazi persecutions.

More than 60,000 Jews were ultimately deported from Amsterdam and murdered during the Holocaust. Researchers have documented how city officials enabled these atrocities by releasing population records identifying Jewish residents, authorizing Dutch police participation in Gestapo operations, and allowing municipal transportation services to benefit financially from moving Nazi personnel to sites where Jews were gathered before being deported.

Survivors who made it back to the city after liberation often faced additional trauma, including demands to pay taxes for the years they had spent in concentration camps.

“Better late than never,” said Ronny Naftaniel, a prominent figure in the Dutch Jewish community, speaking to the Het Parool newspaper. “It would be good if the apology was not just about the war, but also the period immediately afterwards, given the cold reception that returned Jews received at the time.”

According to Jewish News UK, Halsema is also expected to announce a £21.4 million fund dedicated to promoting Jewish life in Amsterdam and addressing the rising tide of antisemitism. Just last November, Israeli football fans visiting Amsterdam were violently targeted by rioters with very few of the perpetrators receiving due justice.
